fathomtrust.com/stories/making-well-health-healing-through-green-crafts/ It was the perfect winter morning for the Green Minds gardening team to get planting the first Welsh heritage variety apple trees in our new community orchard area @breconcathedral
Today we planted a lovely Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music to help get us all singing ;-) Raised by John Basham & Sons from a Cox’s Orange Pippin, a popular garden tree across the border in the west of England too… A Brith Mawr of Newport origin from the 19th Century. Supplier Tom Adams fruit tree nursery believes that “brith mawr” means something like “speckled big” in Welsh? A once very popular variety in South Wales as both a sharp eater and reliable cooker… And one Pig Aderyn of St.Dogmael’s, Pembrokeshire origin … possibly Norman The top of a Pig Aderyn is said to look like a bird’s beak - “pig aderyn” in Welsh. This old Welsh variety can still be found growing at the Abbey of St.Dogmael said to be very popular with the monks as it makes an excellent cider ! Always a great feeling planting trees and we wish them well ! #greenmindsecotherapy #communitygardening #ecotherapy #communityorchard #welshappletrees #heritageappletrees #breconanddistrictmind Hear about our partnership with Brecon Cathedral during the 'A 1000 Years of Calm' community project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It's been such a fantastic experience for us and our gardening group members to be involved with the project and grow our garden spaces within the Cathedral grounds. Our garden is now flourishing and open to the public, as is the new heritage trail, featuring 15 items to look out for with QR codes linking you to some of the fascinating history and heritage on your very doorstep. "Brecon Cathedral is the site of an ancient Benedictine priory. It's now the site of a new project assisting with mental health, restoring vegetable and flower gardens for the public to enjoy where they might once have offered food and a place of peaceful contemplation for monks. These days, the Church has been working in partnership with the Brecon branch of the mental health organisation Mind, and volunteers under the direction of gardening therapist Jess Tanner have enjoyed seeing the fruits of their labour growing. Jonathan Thomas visits the garden and the wider project, 'A Thousand Years of Calm', telling the untold stories of the Cathedral's thousand year history and some of the people who once lived and worked in the vicinity. Jonathan talks to historian Sarah Ward-Clavier, and to Canon Residentiary, Rev Dr Mark Clavier, about the project and some of the hidden histories they have discovered in the trees and graveyard"

It was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of projects such as ourselves, and the vital role nature can play in supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of all. Thanks also goes again to Brecon Cathedral for their ongoing support of our groups work, and for providing the spaces that have enabled us to create much needed food and wildlife havens for the community as a whole.
Join us in the peaceful and beautiful setting of the new Heritage Kitchen Garden at Brecon Cathedral. Immerse yourself in colour, texture and scent through mindfulness and nature connection based practices.

Thank you to everyone who attended, enjoyed and donated plants towards our plant sale project fundraiser on the 29th May at Brecon Cathedral. The day was a great success seeing us raise £445 and counting, as many remaining plants are still available to purchase outside Pilgrims tearoom in the grounds. It was particularly lovely for the Green Minds team and group members to see so many people inhabiting and enjoying the new community garden space, many of whom up until now, didn't realise we were there!
Thank you also for all the lovely feedback and comments left by customers, it's great to hear peoples thoughts and to know many found the space inspiring and beneficial to the community as a whole. Join us in the Diocesan car park at Brecon Cathedral for a Spring plant sale. All money raised will go towards Green Minds social & therapeutic gardening projects. If you have any spares you would like to donate please bring these by 10am. Veg, flowers, indoor, outdoor, all welcome! No plants will be turned away.
Current Covid rules will apply. The lovely Pilgrims cafe will be open from 11am serving food & drinks. We look forward to seeing you there! For more info please email: [email protected] |
