Cultivating An Inner Garden

The therapeutic benefits of gardening go a long way back in history and before modern medicine arrived the monastic gardens in medieval Britain were at the frontline in combating disease by providing medicinal herbs, fragrance and green, natural scenery to aid recovery. Within monastic gardens Monks and healers would grow and tend herbs, fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers, not only for themselves and as part of their own spiritual practice but for treating the local community of their ailments also. When I am needing to restore a sense a balance within, perhaps by taking time out for a long walk or finding a space at home to sit quietly I am reminded every time of the importance and need for this interior garden within myself to recalibrate . The conditions in the outside world are constantly changing and it is easy to depend on these external conditions for our own sense of happiness rather than look within and cultivate that sense of safety and security within. I often think about this place within as being like a garden with all of it's own seasons, constantly changing in order to maintain balance in order to thrive.
